Dengue vaccine tested on Indian adults

The world's first dengue vaccine CYD-TDV has passed the crucial India test and could be available in the country as early as by the end of next year.

The vaccine makers Sanofi Pasteur revealed that their first study of the vaccine on Indian adults (aged 18-45 years) across five sites in India — Delhi, Ludhiana, Bangalore, Pune and Kolkata found the vaccine "safe and immunogenic in Indian adults" with results comparable to other clinical studies in Asia.

The study showed that 87% of Indian adults in the trial were positive to dengue at enrolment, confirming the significant endemic nature of the vector borne disease in the country.

Sanofi is in contact with the Indian authorities to assess the best registration pathway for this vaccine. Based on the positive results from two phase III studies conducted in 10 countries across Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Sanofi will prepare to submit the vaccine for licensure in endemic countries in the first quarter of 2015.

Dengue is a threat to nearly half of the world's population. It is endemic in over 100 countries. One person is hospitalized every single minute with dengue.

What causes Kidney Damage?

There are many things that can cause the kidneys not to work properly. As we age, kidney function decreases. There are many diseases that can affect the kidneys. These can be diseases you are born with or develop sometime during your life. Two common diseases that cause kidney failure include diabetes (both type 1 and type 2) and high blood pressure (hypertension). Also, diseases that cause failure in other organs, such as the heart or liver, often will cause damage to the kidneys. Kidneys can become damaged if they are not getting good blood flow. This can happen if you become dehydrated or seriously ill. Other things that can damage the kidneys include kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and medications or drugs.

When the kidneys aren't working properly waste products build up in your body and make you feel sick. Your body may not be able to regulate fluid and you can get swelling in your extremities. You may not be able to make enough red blood cells, causing you to become anaemic. You may develop high blood pressure and your bones may become weaker. Having a blood test done on a routine basis and avoid dehydration are two of the most basic ways to avoid Kidney damage and prevent it as well.
